Spinner and error detection when loading layers or base map

The basemap is now featuring a spinner, which is shown while a layer or the base map is loading.

Also, an alert message is displayed when an error occurs in loading a layer or the base map.

Geoportal updated with OpenLayers 2.12

The INSPIRE Geoportal is now using the latest version of the OpenLayers library (v2.12).

With this version a number of new features have been introduced - e.g., tile offline storage, better accessibility support (mobile), CSS-based tile animation.

Reversed sorting of active layers (last loaded layer first)

Active layers are now sorted keeping on top the last loaded layer.

Autocomplete bug fix

Fixed bug which returned an inconsistent number of hits while typing search terms.

Improvements to the ranking of search results

The criteria used to rank the search results have been modified in order to take into account completeness of information provided. In particular, the highest rank score is given to those providing an effective description of the resource, specifying their spatial coverage, and which are viewable.

Moreover, by default, only datasets and series are now returned in the result list (these settings can be modified by selecting the options displayed under the "Search" box).

New search filters available

New search filters available (origin, topic category, service type).
Users can now select the search filters to be displayed in the sidebar, and the choice is recorded for the whole browser session.
The filter concerning resource types has been moved in a separate widget; users can now decide exactly which types of resources are to be returned in the search results (default is datasets and series).

Share metadata on Twitter

A Twitter button has been added to each individual metadata result page as to share a peculiar metadata description with the Twitter community.

Graphical preview of resources

Clickable thumbnails are now included in the page displaying resource metadata. They are generated from WMS 1.3.0 services (support of 1.1.1 under development). This feature is provided as is and should be further improved.

When clicked, the full image is shown in a popup window.

Updated base map and added higher zoom level

The discovery service now uses a new, more detailed base map, which can be zoomed up to a scale of 1:250,000.

Added sort options for search results

A dropdown has been added to the interface, thanks to which it is possible to sort results, either in ascending or descending order, base on the following information:

relevance
resource title
member state
date of creation
date of last revision
resource type
spatial data service type

Added country flag to search results to denote their provenance

Each search result now carries an icon depicting the flag of the EU Member State releasing the corresponding resource.
