ANNEX 3 | Sea regions (View Data Service)
Data originated from the Department of Lands and Surveys
concerning Natural / Artificial coastline and shore.
Artificial coastline is the intersection of the SeaSurface with a construction.
Natural coastline is the intersection of the Sea Surface and the Earth's
Surface. The coastline changes dynamically due to tides and waves. Thus there is
an area of land which is washed by the sea accordingly. In this layer there
are two basic categories. The low water line (chart datum) which is the lowest
sea level and the Highest Winter Waterline (HWL) which is the line that reflects
the washed area at peak high water during tides or during the winter when we
have severe weather. The HWL line usually coincides with the limit of where the
vegetation starts. This layer was created to support nautical charts compilation
and Maritime Spatial Planning. The use of this layer is not recommended for
property and legal applications as it has not been confirmed by field checks.
Shore is the intertidal area, which is limited by the Lowest Astronomical Tide
and the highest state of the sea caused by tides or during the worst
meteorological conditions in an area. Having in mind that the tides are limited
in the Mediterranean sea, this area is small with a width of a few meters.
