Modellen gir i hovedsak døgnlige verdier for vannstand, havtemperatur, saltholdighet og strømfart og retning i ulike dybder. MET Norway's operational ocean model ROMS is run on a 4 km polar-stereographic grid covering the Nordic Seas. The model is run twice daily with atmospheric forcing from ECMWF 0.125 deg, vertical boundary conditions from UKMO FOAM, and tides from TPXO 7.2, to provide forecasts to +240 hrs. This specific dataset provides daily mean information at various depths in the ocean. A numerical model is applied to describe the dynamics of the oceans, such as sea level variations (tides and storm surge), movements in the water column (currents) and the salinity and temperature. The model runs on a supercomputer, and provides forecasts of sea level, currents, salinity and temperature. The model is run operationally, i.e, in a "24/7/365" environment to provide a 99.5% stability on a yearly basis. Currents from the model are further applied in emergency models that simulate pathways of oil slicks and drifting objects (Search And Rescue). This is a three-dimensional, free-surface, terrain-following numerical model that solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the hydrostatic and Boussinesq assumptions (Haidvogel et al., 2008). ROMS has a large selection of physical and numerical options that can be specified by the user. These options are activated trough a C-preprocessor, and gives the user a selection of different turbulence closure models to parametrize small-scale turbulent processes, various bottom boundary layer dynamics, ecosystem modules, and a sea ice module. The model uses a S-coordinate system for the vertical coordinates. This enables the user to adjust how the resolution is distributed in the vertical. The area for which we run the model is characterized by large depth fluctuations. Therefore it is advantageous to use a s-type coordinate system model compared to a more conventional z-coordinate model, since the s-coordinate model has a better simulation of the top and bottom mixed layers. The horizontal grid is staggered using the Arakawa C-grid, and the primitive equations for the prognostic variables u, v and rho are evaluated in different points. There is also a split-explicit time-stepping algorithm of the barotropic (fast) and baroclinic (slow) modes, where the barotropic modes has a much shorter time step than the baroclinic modes.
