This layer shows the agglomeration defined for Malta according to the requirements of Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. This is the area for which strategic noise maps are produced.

The delineation of the agglomeration has been carried out through a study By Stacey and Bush, 2002. In order to delineate the extent of the agglomeration within Malta, the main urban areas and archipelago coastline was assessed within a Geographical Information System. A 100m buffer zone was applied to all urban areas, hence urban areas separated by less than 200m can be highlighted as part of the same continuous urban area. After completion of this analysis, it was identified that the most significant continuous urban area in Malta was comprised of Valletta, Sliema districts and some surrounding environs. This urban area has been identified as the agglomeration and is assumed to have a population of greater than 250,000 inhabitants as per the requirements of Directive 2002/49/EC. MEPA believes that this method is acceptable and in line with the actual situation.
