DK INSPIRE PS Natura 2000 Habitat Areas
EF-habitatområder er ét af tre internationale naturbeskyttelsesområder, der samlet betegnes Natura 2000. Natura 2000 omfatter: EF-fuglebeskyttelsesområder, EF-habitatområder samt Ramsarområder. Habitatområder udpeges for at beskytte og bevare bestemte naturtyper og arter af dyr og plante, som er af betydning for EU.

Habitatområderne er udpeget på baggrund af Habitatdirektivet fra 1992 (Rådets direktiv 92/43/EØF om bevaring af naturtyper samt vilde dyr og planter med senere ændringer). Danmark har 269 habitatområder. Hvert område er udpeget dels for at beskytte dels for at genoprette en gunstig bevaringsstatus for bestemte naturtyper og arter af dyr og planter. Habitatområderne dækker et areal på ca. 20.000 km², heraf ca. 3.540 km² på land og ca. 16.440 km² på havet.
