INSPIRE Theme Annex I Coordinate Reference Systems - Dataset of Hungary - Hungarian national GPS network (OGPSH)
It is well known that – under certain conditions – GPS allows positioning anywhere on the Earth surface. However, the accuracy of the absolute point positioning using a single receiver is insufficient for surveying. For surveyors, the only way is to perform relative measurements, for which reference points distributed all over the country are needed. The coordinates of the reference points have to be determined in the 3-dimensional system of GPS. The conventional coordinates of these points have to be known as well, in order to allow transformation between the different reference systems. The solution is to survey selected point marks of the traditional network with GPS technique. In the 1990s, this work was done in almost all countries. In Hungary, the state surveying authority established the national GPS network (OGPSH) between 1995 and 1997. The network consists of 1153 points, corresponding to a mean distance of about 10 km between any two neighbouring ones. The OGPSH network provides reference points for relative measurements (i.e. realises the reference system), as well as allows the transformation between the GPS and traditional coordinate systems. As long as the traditional Uniform National Projection System (EOV) is in use, we will always need the OGPSH.

The OGPSH was planned and established by the Satellite Geodetic Observatory. Using the OGPSH points as a reference, it is possible to improve the initial 10-m accuracy of GPS point positioning to cm or even mm-accuracy. Until the completion of the active GPS network, OGPSH points could be used as a basis for high-accuracy real-time applications (DGPS, RTK) as well. A surveyors can obtain the description of OGPSH points from the database. Look for the OGPSH data under the "Control points" menu item. All the 1153 points are displayed in one large (about 350 kbyte) image as well.
