Kortlægningen følger bestemmelserne fastsat i EU direktiv 2002/49 med efterfølgende ændringer senest implementeret i støjkortlægningsbekendtgørelsen nr. 2092 af 18/11/2021. Større jernbaner, der opfylder kriterierne > 30.000 togpassager/år (>82 togpassager/døgn) uden for større, samlede byområder, hvor støjbelastning er større end Lnight = 50 dB skal kortlægges.
