Purpose

Groundwater boreholes are a point where drilling for groundwater has been carried out, and the purpose is water supply, nationwide monitoring of groundwater parameters over time, establishment of energy wells for ground sourced energy, overview of natural sources or exploration wells (probes). During exploration drilling, groundwater-related data is recorded during drilling itself, but where the borehole collapses after drilling is completed.

Datafangsten er basert på innholdet i et brønnskjema som primært brønnborefirmaene leverer når det bores en brønn. Forskrift om oppgaveplikt ved brønnboring og grunnvannsundersøkelser trådte i kraft 1. januar 1997 og omfatter rapporteringsplikt til NGU. De innrapporterte brønndataene blir deretter kvalitetssikret av NGU, og er deretter tilgjengelig i karttjenester og som nedlastbart datasett umiddelbart.
