Bio-geographical provinces of Finland

Suomen eliömaakunnat, joista toisinaan käytetään myös nimeä luonnontieteelliset maakunnat, ovat vuoden 1930 kuntarajojen perusteella määriteltyjä valtakunnan osa-alueita, jotka pyrkivät jakamaan Suomen eliömaantieteellisiin kokonaisuuksiin. Koska kuntien rajat ovat ajan mittaan muuttuneet monin tavoin, eliömaakuntien rajat eivät noudata monin paikoin mitään nykyisiä hallinnollisia rajoja.

Eliömaakuntien rajat on perinteisesti esitetty julkaisuissa pienimittakaavaisilla kartoilla, joilla eliömaakuntien rajat on esitetty likimääräisesti. Lajitietokeskus käyttää eliömaakuntien rajoina aineistoa, joka perustuu Luonnontieteellisen keskusmuseon kasvimuseossa tehtyyn selvitystyöhön vuoden 1930 kuntarajoista.

Alkuperäiset eliömaakunnat ulottuivat idässä Jäämerelle asti ja kaakossa Laatokan itäpuolelle. Sotien jälkeen tapahtuneiden alueluovutusten jälkeen Nyky-Suomen alueella on 21 eliömaakuntaa. Kullakin eliömaakunnalla on suomen- ja latinankielinen nimi sekä suomen- ja latinankielinen lyhenne. Hyönteistieteellisessä kirjallisuudessa on käytetty muutamista Pohjois-Suomen eliömaakunnista vaihtoehtoisia nimiä, jotka on myös esitetty oheisessa taulukossa virallisen nimen alapuolella.

The Bio-geographical provinces are internally homogeneous biogeographical regions of Finland. The number of regions is 21. The regions were spatially defined by an expert committee in 1930 as collections of municipalities. Consequently, the province boundaries follow the delineation of of municipalities in the 1930's including some enclaves, exclaves, and narrow stripes as the province boundaries have not been changed or updated since then excluding the cession of territory after the Second World War. All regions have names and abbreviations in Finnish, Swedish, and Latin. No other attribute data is available.

Lajitietokeskus käyttää eliömaakuntien rajoina aineistoa, joka perustuu Luonnontieteellisen keskusmuseon kasvimuseossa tehtyyn selvitystyöhön vuoden 1930 kuntarajoista.

Consequently, the province boundaries follow the delineation of of municipalities in the 1930's including some enclaves, exclaves, and narrow stripes as the province boundaries have not been changed or updated since then excluding the cession of territory after the Second World War. [2] The digital version described here has been prepared by the FMNH. The positional accuracy of the data is estimated to be about 20 meters. Topological consistency ("edgematching") has been confirmed by separating region boundaries (n = 85). [3] The Bio-geographical regions of Finland do not correspond to the European regions. Parts of the two most northern Finnish regions belong to European Alpine zone whereas the rest of Finland belong to the boreal zone.
