Iris...GE
L’INSEE s’appuie sur la définition d’îlots de référence pour les besoins des recensements nationaux sur l’ensemble des communes de plus de 10 000 habitants et la plupart des communes de 5 000 à 10 000 habitants. L’IRIS (Ilots Regroupés pour l’Information Statistique) est la brique de base en matière de diffusion de données locales.
En 2014, l’INSEE et l’IGN avaient sensiblement amélioré la géométrie des contours d’IRIS. En 2015, l’IGN a procédé au recalage « fin » des limites d’IRIS sur le RGE®. Il existe ainsi une version grande échelle, IRIS… GE, parfaitement compatible avec la BD TOPO®.

Après intégration dans un SIG, IRIS... GE permet de faire le lien entre des données cartographiques diverses (bâtiments, adresses, ...) et les données statistiques de l’INSEE.
Attention ! IRIS... GE ne contient aucune des données statistiques de l’INSEE, mais permet seulement une cartographie fine de ces données par l’intermédiaire des numéros d’IRIS.

Les données IRIS... GE ont été créées à partir des fonds numérisés à l'îlot par l'INSEE et des limites communales BD TOPO®. Dans les années 2010, le besoin de croiser les contours d’IRIS avec d’autres couches de données à grande échelle, notamment le bâti du RGE®, a conduit l’INSEE à améliorer la représentation cartographique des limites d’IRIS, en s’appuyant sur le RGE® et les plans cadastraux. Ce travail a été réalisé entre 2012 et 2014 et a été publié dans le cadre de la réalisation du produit IRIS... GE.
