Quick clay

  • English

The maps provide an overview of areas with a potential risk (susceptibility areas) of major quick clay slides. The zones are identified and defined by means of quaternary geological mapping (in order to identify areas with marine clay), geotechnical assessment of topography and basic geotechnical surveys. The zones include only trigger areas for quick clay slides (areas that may slip out), not run-out areas (areas that may be affected by slide masses). The quick clay zones identified are classified in three hazard level classes (high, medium and low hazard level) on the basis of topographic, geotechnical and hydrological criteria. The zones are also classified in three consequence classes (high, medium and low consequence class) depending on the consequences of a landslide in the zone on buildings and infrastructure. The zones are then classified into five risk classes, derived from the hazard level and consequence classifications.

Purpose
The maps are intended primarily as a basis for assessment of the risk of quick clay slides at municipal plan level. The maps are also intended as a basis for information for municipalities, landowners, contractors and others with a view to avoiding terrain interventions and other activities that may trigger landslides. These zones show areas where particular care must be taken to prevent major quick clay slides in the case of spatial planning, development and terrain interventions. The maps do not show run-off areas for slide masses. Therefore, the run-off areas must be assessed separately. The mapped zones only show quick clay zones with a potential risk of major landslides (terrain with height differences of 15 m and above). There may also be quick clay zones at risk of landslides outside the identified zones. Therefore, general care must be taken to prevent possible quick clay slides in all areas with marine clay deposits. Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate guidelines "Flaum- og skredfare i arealplanar med tilhørende veileder", "Vurdering av områdestabilitet ved utbygging på kvikkleire og andre jordarter med sprøbruddegenskaper" and the guide on the technical building regulations describe this in greater detail.

Specific usage

The dataset is primarily meant for risk assesment for quick clay slides in land use planning for municipal plans.\\nThe dataset also forms the basis for municipalities, land owners, developers and others to avoid actions which can initiate quick clay slides, and where special precautions have to be made. \\n\\nThe identified quick clay zones show only areas with the potential of major quick clay slides(difference in height 15m or more). Zones prone to quick clay slides can be found outside the identified zones at risk.\\nIn all areas with marine clay deposits, special precautions have to be taken against potential quick clay slides.\\nThe subject is covered in NVE report "Flaum og skredfare i arealplaner", NVE instruction manual "Vurdering av områdestabilitet ved utbygging på kvikkleire og andre jordarter med sprøbruddegenskaper” and instruction manual to "Regulations om technical requirements for construction works" (TEK17).

Supplemental Information

The dataset for quick clay consist of two polygon themes, the overview theme map sheet and the detailed theme quick clay hazard zone. Map sheets show the coverage level for quick clay mapping divided into M711 map sheets (mapping is carried out on a per-sheet basis). Quick clay hazard zones includes the hazard zones themselves. The hazard zones are mapped on a scale of 1:50,000, while the detail level of the dataset suggests use within the map scale: 1:10,000 - 1:100,000.

Statement

Datasettet for kvikkleire består av to flatetema, oversiktstemaet Kartblad og detaljtemaet KvikkleireFaresone. Kartblad viser dekningsgrad for kvikkleirekartleggingen inndelt i M711-kartblad (kartleggingen er gjort kartbladvis). KvikkleireFaresone inneholder selve faresonene. NGI-rapport 20001008 – 2, rev. 3, datert 18. okt. 2008).
