INSPIRE Theme Annex I Coordinate Reference Systems - Dataset of Hungary - Hungarian national GPS network (MAG)
The classical method to establish a horizontal reference network is the triangulation. Here the relative positions of the control points are determined by measuring the inner angles of the respective triangles they form. This gives the shape of the network. The linear size can be established if the lengths of at least one of the sides is known.

If astronomical measuremens are applied to determine the geographic longitude and latitude of at least one point, and the azimuth of one direction starting from this point to another one, then the orientation of the network with respect to the Earth is known. To improve the accuracy, the traditional triangulation networks had length determinations and astronomical measurements at several points. Before the development of the electronic distance measurement technique in the middle of the 20th century, the length determinations (using e.g. invar wires) were much more compicated than angular measurements. For this reason, the classical triangulation was used for establishing extended (national, continental) horizontal networks. With the advent of the high-accuracy electronic equipment, it also became possible to use exclusively distance measurements (trilateration). The accuracy of horizontal control networks could gradually be improved by incorporating space geodetic techniques from the 1980s.
