MarineBottomSedimentsWMS

  • English

The map layer provides an overview of the dominant sedimentation environment in the mapped area. This is an interpretation of the processes that prevail on and near the seabed in terms of deposition, transport and erosion of sediments. The map has been digitized for use at a scales of about 1:20 000 (detailed).

Specific usage

The map layer can be used as basis for areal planning, environmental planning, habitat mapping, vulnerability analyzes, impact analysis in connection with installations on the seabed, location of aquaculture farms etc. Sediment maps classified by genesis provide details of past and present depositional environment and seabed conditions.

Statement

The data for this map layer has been interpreted and digitized by NGU, but the sources for interpretations are data from the Norwegian Geological Survey (NGU), the Norwegian Mapping Authority, the Institute of Marine Research (HI) and the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI). Sedimentation environment is interpreted based on maps of Seabed sediments (grain size) and detailed bathymetry data. Sedimentation environment is digitized using ArcGIS tools. The WMS service was created with Mapserver7 and is available in several coordinate systems, both via http:// and https://.
