Flood hazard map
Flood hazard maps show areas that are prone to flooding at various flood levels ( return periods). Flood hazard maps are prepared for floods with 20-, 200- and 1000-year return period. In areas where climate change is expected to increase water discharge with more than 20%, flood hazard maps are being prepared for a 200-year flood in the year 2100.

- Purpose
- The main purpose of the flood hazard maps is to provide municipalities with better data for spatial planning and contingency planning. The maps help to reduce damage by avoiding establishment of new buildings in areas susceptible to flooding.

Flood hazard maps should be used in land use planning to identify areas prone to flooding( should not be developed), and in order to assess relevant risk-reducing measures if it is impossible to avoid development.
Guidelines 2-2011 Flaum- og skredfare i arealplanar (Flood and avalanche risk in land use planning) describe how safety requirements for structures specified in the Regulations on technical requirements for building works (TEK 17), section 7-2 can be fulfilled in spatial planning.
When dealing with detailed zoning plans, division proceedings and processing building applications, it is necessary to take the limited accuracy of the flood hazard maps into account. In-situ measurements of elevation should be checked and compared to the calculated water levels.
If development is planned in areas prone to flooding, it is recommended to add a safety margin to the calculated water levels to take uncertainty in the data into account.
