Le acque piovane e fluviali, trovando materiali molto permeabili, penetrano in profondità nel sottosuolo. Parte dei volumi d'acqua assorbiti riaffiorano successivamente in superficie in corrispondenza di terreni impermeabili su una linea, detta delle risorgive, che va da Polcenigo a Monfalcone con un'inclinazione nord-ovest sud-est.
