Per edificio si intende un corpo costruito che non presenta soluzione di continuità, ha un'unica tipologia edilizia, può avere più categorie d'uso, ha un dato stato di conservazione e può eventualmente essere sotterraneo.Appartiene al tema "Edificato" della BDTRE (Base Dati Territoriale di Riferimento degli Enti) che raggruppa la definizione degli edifici, intesi come costruzioni stabili, in muratura, legno, pannelli prefabbricati o altro materiale, coperti con un tetto, destinati per la maggioranza dei casi all'abitazione permanente dell'uomo od allo svolgimento delle attività lavorative o ricreativo sportive.
